National Rebuild Day in Dolphin Heights!

Last fall the Dolphin Heights Neighborhood Association partnered with bcWORKSHOP, a non-profit community design center that will rebuild, repair, and weatherize many homes in the area. You have probably seen the bcWORKSHOP gang knocking on doors, answering questions at their little green homes, and collecting applications for these free home services over the last few months. This past weekend, bcWORKSHOP joined forces with non-profit Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas to repair 11 homes throughout Dolphin Heights!

Rebuilding Together’s National Rebuild Day is nationwide event taking place over the course of two weekends. This year it kicked off on April 17th and RTGD focused most of its efforts in Dolphin Heights, repairing 11 homes in our area! Most houses received new siding and a fresh coat of paint in vibrant pinks and greens while others required more intensive foundation or roof repairs. Many will continue to be weatherized to become more energy-efficient and receive repairs by bcWORKSHOP’s Workforce Program, which trains and employs Dolphin Heights residents to do home construction in our neighborhood.

It was great to see so many people working together on these homes and we are thankful to bcWORKSHOP, Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas, and the hundreds of volunteers for coming together and working in Dolphin Heights!

KaBOOM Election Day!

by dhna

Dallas, Texas, April 12, 2010—As the big KaBOOM! Build Day approaches, the community of Dolphin Heights is working enthusiastically, and hastily, to ensure that all of the logistics are in place to carry out a successful construction day. But all planning came to a temporary halt, as the group of project planners and community leaders temporarily surrendered the work to the project’s most important clients: the Dolphin Heights children.

KaBOOM! Project Manager, Kevin Skolnik, unveiled three significantly different playground design schemes to the neighborhood children and asked them to vote for their favorite. Kids from every corner of Dolphin Heights vociferously expressed their opinions and selected their favorite design. Some were thrilled at the first design’s tall rock climbing wall; others preferred the second design’s extended bridge and triple racer slide; still, others were impressed by the rumble seat slide and large tire-swing of design number three. It was a tight election, but at the end of the day, there was but one clear winner. This winning design is scheduled to be made public shortly. With the sponsorship of Home Depot and the support of the Dolphin Heights Neighborhood Association, KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization which builds playgrounds throughout North America, will construct the winning playground design on an empty lot in Dolphin Heights’ Silver Street.

KaBOOM! Build Day will take place on Thursday, May 20, 2010.
